  • Why does black iron oxide sludge develop inside central heating systems?

Iron oxide, or magnetite, is a result of natural oxidation inside nearly all untreated iron pipe systems. Any structure built before 1960 is likely to have iron pipe, and these systems are still in use today. Fine particles of iron oxide eventually build up to form a black sludge.

  • Does MagnaClean just filter out iron oxide?

Larger, non-magnetic debris such as scale will also be filtered out in the top and bottom capture zones of residential filters, while magnetic debris will collect around the magnet in the canister.

  • How do I remove the sludge from the filter after it’s collected?

Simply remove the magnetic rod and sheath over a bucket or sink. Once the sheath is removed, the magnetite falls off. You can rinse off any residue very easily with running water. For MagnaClean Commercial filters, which contain multiple rods, each rod can be lifted out individually allowing the magnetite to fall into the base of the filter. Once all the rods have been removed, remove the drain nut at the base of the filter and flush out slowly opening the valve on the flow side of the filter.

  • When using MagnaClean, how do you keep the loosened magnetite from flowing back into the system?

The magnets installed in all ADEY filters are very strong rare earth magnets. They are arranged in a unique array to hold the magnetite as it builds up, but without completely blocking the canister. It stays attached to the magnetic rods until you remove them to rinse, and will not get pulled back into system water.

  • Are there any moving parts?

No – MagnaClean works as water flows around the magnet. It is directed in a cyclonic flow around the inside of the canister due to the design of the inlet and outlet valve, maximising first-pass capture without the need for moving parts.

  • Are there any parts to replace?

No – the magnet will last for the lifetime of the system.

  • What is the range of applications MagnaClean covers?

There is a MagnaClean for nearly every installation. There are models for everything from small properties to large commercial and industrial applications. Here are the options, for easy reference: Single-family properties: MagnaClean Micro2 for up to 10 radiators; the MagnaClean Professional2 for 15 radiators; and the MagnaClean Professional2XP for larger domestic buildings. Multi-family or large properties, as well as light-commercial facilities: MagnaClean DualXP for 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" pipework. The ADEY commercial filters come in five sizes: 2”, 3”, 4”, 6” and 8”.

  • Is MagnaClean for retrofit applications or new construction?

Both. Whether you’re retrofitting or installing a new system, the process is quick and simple.

  • What is the retrofit process?

For domestic applications, it is a simple process. Easy to follow instructions are included with every filter. As an example, for a Pro2 Filter, a 150mm section of copper pipe is cut out, compression fittings are fixed to the pipe, and then compression fittings are tightened. Watch a video about it here.

  • How often does MagnaClean need to be serviced/cleaned?

After initial installation and checking first pass capture of magnetite, usually once a year alongside the boiler service.

  • How do I know if the Atom is in filtration mode?

The head of the valve has a white dot on it. Where the arrows on the valve are pointing away from each other and the dot is next to this, the product is in filtration mode. To bypass, turn the valve 180 for the dot to point to the angled arrow. Please see the Atom guide for more detail.

  • Are chemicals needed in addition to a MagnaClean filter?

Yes, they are recommended as part of ADEY’s Best Practice System. Use MC3+ Cleaner before installing MagnaClean to loosen existing debris, sludge, lime scale deposits and system corrosion. Use MC1+ Inhibitor after installation to protect against further system corrosion.

  • What is the difference between RAPIDE and regular System Treatment Formulas?

Same formulas, different dosing methods. RAPIDE can be dosed in just 20 seconds into a fill point using the attached adaptorsr on the rapid-dose nozzle, while regular bottled formulas can be poured into the MagnaClean canister.

  • How do you put MC3+ RAPIDE and MC1+ RAPIDE into the system?

These can either be put in via the air vent on your filter, the radiator, or the filling loop. As they are pressurised canisters. Each canister has instructions on the side of the canister.

  • How do you determine the dilution of the cleanser?

One bottle handles up to 125L of system water.

  • Are there other solutions for removing iron oxide?

Yes, but none that work this well to remove iron oxide. There are mesh strainers and basket filters, both of which can clog or reduce the flow inside a system. Also, because individual particles of magnetite are .0003 microns in size, they are too small to be caught by the holes in mesh strainers. It would be like trying to catch a football in a net with holes the size of the Statue of Liberty. MagnaClean captures iron oxide particles completely independently of particle size.

  • Do MagnaClean filters come with a warranty?

All filters come with a warranty that can be registered by either the homeowner or the installer. Homeowners can register the warranty via adey.com, and installers can register them via ADEY ProClub in order to gain points.

  • On the Atom filter, do I need to use the slip coupler provided?

No, you don’t have to, but you will have to use an alternative ¾ female fitting to create the seal.

  • I need to order a spare part for my filter.

You can order spare parts for our filters at adeyspares.co.uk.

  • Can I install the filter horizontally?

This is not recommended as it could cause air locks in the filter, it will be difficult to service and may cause flow restrictions. It will also have an impact on the collection of non-magnetic debris.

  • Why are the valves labelled A&B?

This is solely for our reference. Valve A is a slip coupler, and the filters with these valves are bi-directional.

  • What is the flow direction of the MagnaClean filters?

Most of our filters are bi-directional, please see product pages for more detail.

  • How many radiators will a MagnaClean Micro2 clean?

A MagnaClean Micro2 will sufficiently maintain a clean system on up to 10 radiators.

  • How frequently do I need to service the filter?

We recommend it is cleaned once a year, using the ADEY Best Practice six-step process, which includes topping up with ADEY's inhibitor, MC1+.

  • Will the filter capture non-magnetic debris?

Yes, as long as it is installed in accordance to our instructions.

  • How long can I leave MC3+ in the system for?

From 1 hour, up to a maximum of 28 days. As part of our Best Practice, we recommend leaving it for as long as possible (not exceeding 28 days). For best results ensure that the heating is on for some of the time that it is in the system.

  • How long can I leave MC5 in the system for?

From 1 hour, up to a maximum of 7 days, as this is a stronger concentration of chemicals. As part of our Best Practice, we recommend leaving it for the maximum if you can. For best results ensure that the heating is on for some of the time that it is in the system.

  • What is MC1+?

MC1+ protects against both system corrosion and limescale deposit build up.

  • How long can I leave MC1+ in the system?

This is designed to stay in your system.

  • I cannot remember my password, how can I access my account?

As you are logging into the ProClub you will have an option to click ‘Forgotten Password’, this will send a link to the Email attached to your ProClub account with a link to reset it.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, we are offering digital retail vouchers which will be sent to you between 2-3 weeks.

  • Do I need a pump or powerflush with the MagnaCleanse?

No, with the Best Practice approach and using ADEY’s cleaners, the MagnaCleanse unit can perform a thorough flush of the system.

  • How do I register my MagnaCleanse warranty?

You will need to have an ADEY ProClub account in order to register your warranty. Registering your MagnaCleanse unit here to receive rewards as well as activate your warranty.

  • Does the MagnaCleanse unit come with filter adaptors?
